Alisa Zaika
Alisa Zaika (b. 2001) is a composer, conductor and pianist from Kyiv, Ukraine.
She graduated from a BMus (honours) course at the Royal College of Music (London,
UK) with distinction, in first study composition and second study orchestral conducting.
Currently she is an RCM Scholar, studying her Master’s course (composition with
professors Haris Kittos and Simon Holt and conducting with Prof. Howard Williams). In
the UK she is also supported by Talent Unlimited.
In May 2024 Alisa has won the First Prize in the Cantori New York Score Competition along with a performance of the award-receiving choral cycle “The List of Sunken Ships” in the next concert season. Other recent highlights include production of her short opera “I (Romance)” at the Britten Theatre by the Royal College of Music and the Tête à Tête opera company (June 2024); winning the Silver Medal in the 7th Manhattan International Music Competition with her piece “SHPOL: Sounds of Poetry for Piano Solo” (June 2023); and commission and premiere of a new work “he only dreamed of places now…” by the InterAKT Initiative festival in Stuttgart, Germany (December 2022).
Many of Alisa’s works have been performed internationally, in countries like Italy, Germany, Sweden, Estonia, Poland, Ukraine and the Netherlands. Most notable concert venues include the Warsaw National Philharmonic, the LSO St Luke’s in London and the Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall (Royal College of Music), where her work “CANVAS” for large ensemble was presented at the reception of His Majesty King Charles III (then The Prince of Wales). Additionally, Alisa’s music is featured in the UCLA Library Contemporary Score Collection.
Continuing her studies in conducting, in April 2023 Alisa has co-founded an independent student orchestra Lihtar and has been successfully performing a wide range of repertoire with this collective in London.
Before coming to the UK, Alisa has received secondary music education in her hometown Kyiv (piano with Prof. Iryna Barinova and composition with Prof. Alla Zagaykevych). During her pre-college years she also had a chance to study piano for a year in Vienna, Austria with professors Paul Gulda and Stanislav Tikhonov.
